Pink beads
Posted by Kerry on May 7, 2008 | Permalink
As promised, a snap of my freakishly organised bead collection.
I have a dozen of these boxes. Most of them are organised by colour, except for one that’s all charms and another that’s all faux pearls of various tones and sizes.
I can’t promise you that I’ll be content with a dozen. In fact, I could easily go for another dozen right now. There’s something so pleasing about seeing all the boxes stacked neatly on top of each other, with the coloured beads giving a faint glow to the semi-opaque plastic… OK, I need help.
But you’re jealous, right?

Yes! It’s a necklace!

Here’s a snap of me modeling my latest creation, Down The Rabbit Hole.
I’ve got a few similar pieces up my sleeve at the moment - bold, flamboyant necklaces featuring really unique and original mixed media charms. Each is going to be strictly one of a kind, so if you see one you like, be sure to snap it up sharpish!
If you’d like to see more detail on the necklace, click here for some close-up shots.
And when people ask you where you got the idea for wearing a headscarf and a hairclip together, you tell them you saw it here first, OK?

Yesterday, I made the most beautiful item of jewellery I have ever seen. I’m wearing it right now and I can’t stop looking at it. I’m almost too in love to put it up for sale. I can’t wait to photograph it tonight so I can show you all!
I really don’t want to spoil the surprise, but I just HAD to say something…
Oh, alright. One little clue: it’s not a bracelet. Gasp!

Stylin’

Up until now, I’ve been snapping all my bracelets on white backgrounds, with the focus solely on the pieces. This is great for the pages in my shop, where the visitor would probably like a good, close look at the bracelet without distractions, but not so good for bringing the rest of my site to life.
So, I decided to shoot some photographs of my jewellery using props and backgrounds - the snap on the left there is my favourite, and the one I decided to use for my new front page.
It took me a good while to get a result I was happy with, though - choosing the objects to go in was probably the trickiest bit, followed closely by positioning them. Lighting is also a lot trickier when you’re going for a more subtle effect - especially if, like me, you decide that you want to have a lit candle in shot!
It was a great learning experience, and something I’m really looking forward to repeating in the future. I’ve got some really fun ideas for my (now horribly overdue, I know, I know!) new pieces…

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside
Posted by Kerry on April 10, 2008 | Permalink
This photo was taken by my other half during a walk we took on Good Friday.
We walked from Brighton to Rottingdean, a nearby village, along the sea wall. As you can see, the sea was pretty rough that day - I got soaked by a good one about a mile or so in, but it was sunny and breezy enough to have dried me off by the time we got to the tea room at the end (where I had the most delicious and enormous slice of walnut cake I’ve ever encountered).
More of Neil’s photos can be seen on his flickr account - fewer drag queens, cats and charm bracelets than mine, but more buildings and landscapes.

Bluebird of happiness

If this picture doesn’t cheer you up, I don’t know what will.
It’s a close up of my latest bespoke piece, the gorgeously eclectic bracelet I was talking about last week. I’ll post a full shot of it in all its glory when I update my gallery, but I just had to share this preliminary shot for now.
The bluebird charm is enamelled sterling silver, and it’s about the daintiest, prettiest thing I’ve ever seen. The strawberry tart is a polymer clay miniature and the violin is sterling silver.
If you’d like to see more shots of my work (or my cats, for that matter), please visit my flickr account. There’s not a lot there yet, but I’m really enjoying using my new camera and I’ve resolved to take and share more photographs. Watch this space!

Oh dear.

You know you’re a bit too into crafting when you find yourself having an conversation with a total stranger about varnish and polymer clay. And then thinking afterwards what an interesting conversation it was.
I’m a lost cause.

So long, old pal.

Sniff. Tomorrow I hand over my last ever The Dame Was Loaded charm bracelet. It’s going to a good home - an old friend I haven’t seen in a couple of years - but I’ll still be waving it goodbye with misty eyes.
The Dame Was Loaded, my homage to Film Noir in costume jewellery form, has been my most popular design ever since I launched the site (and it’s still one of my all time faves). There’s something about the mix of ultra-feminine charms and deadly bad gal iconography that really seems to get y’all going - and I’m not going to argue!
But all good things must come to an end, and I feel it’s time to move on. I’m getting more and more out of concentrating only on unique, one of a kind charm bracelets, and I know that my customers prefer the really special one-offs too - that’s why, from now on, I’ll only be focusing on the really weird and wonderful things that I dream up, make once and then remember fondly. Even though I still adore my classic designs (and the not-so-classic ones that nobody bought!), it’s time to focus on the new.
Sigh. For all that, there really was something special about that black and white bracelet. If you’re one of the lucky owners, give it a wistful little smile from me, would you?

Small is beautiful.

The bespoke bracelet I’m working on at the moment is a real beauty - eclectic, delightfully eccentric and full of stories, rather like the lucky lady who’ll be wearing it!
The thing I’m enjoying most about this bracelet - and about my new ready to wear designs - is incorporating different materials into my work. When I started out I was obsessed with all the amazing dinky silver charms out there, and my work was all about the charms. Then, as I got more interested in the weird and wonderful vintage beads out there, it became all about charms and beads. Now it’s all about charms, beads, and whatever else I can get to stay still for long enough to attach to a bracelet! Vintage millinery supplies, beautifully detailed miniatures, tiny toy parts, mysterious old keys… Nothing’s safe from my magpie eye these days!
PS: No, the bracelet doesn’t have miniature fruit and veg on it - I found this picture while shopping for materials, and just loved them is all! Although, now you come to mention it, there does seem to be a gap in the market for cheery organic produce themed jewellery…

Sexy parallax scrolling - in your browser!
Posted by Kerry on March 27, 2008 | Permalink
As you may have noticed by now, I’m not just a kickass jewellery designer - I’m an incredibly nerdy kickass jewellery designer with a serious interest in web design and development.
I’m about a month behind the rest of the world in ogling this, but it seriously impressed me: follow this link and resize the page to see parallax scrolling in your browser! (If you don’t know what parallax scrolling is, it’s a classic graphic effect made very popular in games of the 1990s, where the background srolls at a different speed to the foreground to give the illusion of depth. Betcha wish you hadn’t asked, huh?)
Being the inquisitive soul I am, I had to find out how it was done. Suffice it to say I’m impressed! If I had a bit more free time and less restraint, I’d be experimenting all over this site. Luckily for you, I’m busy with bespoke orders…
